Role:

In October 2019 I joined the Cold Symmetry team as a Combat Designer for their first title Mortal Shell. My specific areas of focus on this project were:

  • Encounter Design: Using the existing level and enemy designs to create interesting and challenging combat encounters for players to overcome

  • level Scripting: Using Unreal Blueprints to create traps, timed spawns, and ambushes.

  • Enemy Scripting: Using Unreal Blueprints and Behavior Trees to script the different phases of each boss fight. Testing them to refine each fight’s pace and flow, while also creating and Implementing Attacks for enemy AI.

  • Game Balance: Tweaking enemy, weapons, and player stats to help balance the game’s combat experience.

  • Game Progression: Worked with other designers to create and balance each weapons upgrade progression. In both the base game experience and New Game+.

Alongside these primary tasks, I also spent time helping out with Level Design, Game Testing and contributed to the designs of Consumable Items and Player Abilities.

About The Game:

Mortal Shell is a single-player Action RPG, revolving around precise combat, exploration, and unravelling dark fantasy lore about hunting unborn gods. Players must inhabit Mortal Shells in order to gain strength and face off against a multitude of twisted enemies. Each of these shells possesses different skills and stats. Each one creating drastically different play styles that at times feels familiar to fans of souls likes, while providing a unique twist on an established genre.
