Client: Storybox, Shanghai Theatre Academy, Shanghai International Arts Festival Roles: UI/UX Design, Asset Creation Time Frame: 1 1/2 Months Tools: Unity3D, Adobe Illustrator Platforms: IOS, Android
In September 2016, I was contracted by local production company Storybox, as a UI/UX Designer to work on an Immersive Theatre Project called Duality for the Shanghai International Arts Festival. To add immersion to the show my task was to help recreate the look of IOS in accurate detail, making the app feel like it was a real phone to the audience members. All the assets used in the show where recreated by me in illustrator and then implemented in unity using the built in UI system.
Along with the shows visual assets, i was also involved with working on user flow for the app. How each of the participants of the show. The Audience, crew, and Actors would gain access to their respective parts of the app. As well as designing how the show setup worked, Getting all audience members and guides phones to sync together using Bluetooth, quickly and simply.
Duality was a collaboration between STA (Shanghai Theatre Academy), Storybox and Shanghai International Arts Festival. As an adaption of format used in Storybox's Previous Immersive theatre project The Woman Who Forgot.
Through the use of a app built in unity, the audience members’ smart phone's are individually transformed into the main character of the show.
Via the app, they are fed information about their character and the world around them. They receive text messages, voice messages and video recorded conversations replicating real-life digital services, all of which are controlled by the story’s app.
To enhance the real world experience, the audience encounters actors on the way around the locations, who build on the pieces of information that have been delivered via the phone app.
